I found this rock at the same field as the quartz rock I posted last night. This rock came from the woods. I broke it loose from the vein. It crumbles into little flakes when you break it. It also has little sparkles all over it. Tiny, I don't know what they are. I have done some searching on this thing and what i think it is a schist rock. but I don't know if I'm right or not so i decided to leave it for the experts. The green is moss this area has a lot of water so it is covering everything.

Could be schist, but it looks more like shale to me. |

Thank you all for the quick answer. I think it could be shale or schist either one. I crushed a little 3 inch by 3 inch block I broke off it and I found quartz, marcasite, pyrite, and black sand. I didn't see any gold in it but I didn't use a loop or anything so I guess it might have some microscopic gold in it but who knows. |

Sam, since it seems to have a large iron content, is it likely to have gold particles as well in a gold bareing area? |
