If there is any feldspar pegmatite around, it may be. It could also be beryl which is also green. |

If it's emerald, it should be a little harder than quartz. If it has a sharp edge you can try scratching a smooth piece of quartz with it. If it leaves a scratch it is quite possibly emerald. another emerald will be able to scratch it if you happen to have one, but this could mar the good one. |

Maybe?
Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple. Amethyst may exhibit one or both secondary hues, red and blue. The ideal grade is called "Deep Siberian" and has a primary purple hue of around 75–80%, with 15–20% blue and (depending on the light source) red secondary hues.[4] Green quartz is sometimes incorrectly called green amethyst, which is an actual misnomer and not an acceptable name for the material, the proper terminology being Prasiolite. It is actually against FTC Guidelines to call prasiolite green amethyst.[citation needed] Other names for green quartz are vermarine, greened amethyst, or lime citrine. |

If there is a college nearby with a geology dept, they are usually glad to provide an ID. I've taken many specimens to the College of Charleston.
Let us know once you find out what it is, please. |

Sysbee,
By posting the image code on the forum the pictures will show up here in your post, I took the liberty of posting them from your links.
I'm not the best in IDing raw gemstones, but I'm wondering if it could be a Sapphire instead of a Emerald, looks more blue than green to me?

Hard to tell from the photo. Does it have any noticeable crystal structure? |

Looks like Copper Sulfate. Should be easy enough to test as it has a hardness of 2.5. Maybe?

That's awesome. Cool find!
I don't understand it but found more small gems in the heart of Greensboro NC more than anywhere. The creek runs all through guilford county. |

Beryl has been found in white county before. Corundum as well.
http://www.mindat.org/loc-27208.html
I would test the hardness though regardless of what anyone says. Also keep in mind just cause you found it there doesnt mean someone else didnt drop it there before you. I got some rough beryl that was in my concentrates that I thought came from NC, but turned out to be from brazil. |
