I have a piece of what I think/thought was a quartz crystal chunk about a little over a quarter in size. What is odd is it has 3 very symmetrical triangles that looks like it was imprinted on it but it came from a wild creek 2 feet down..so no one has altered it. The triangles are small but easily seen with naked eye no problem...perfect looking triangles just on one of the faces of the crystal. Here is a pic but can't see them or the clarity of the crystal. Maybe someone knows what I'm talking about. Thanks
Btw, found in uwharrie formation area but not in unf.

The triangular "imprint" pattern is common in diamonds. It's hard to tell from the photo but it would be worth checking out. Diamonds come in many crystal forms and shapes. The shape of the diamond can even be altered by partial resorption of the crystal as it is traveling in the highly volatile environment of a kimberlite pipe.

That is what I had read about before but was not sure. Or more so..if it is a diamond, would be huge find even with the flaws etc. Thing is bigger than a qtr lol. The light hits it and gives off beautiful all colors of a rainbow. I know its possible to be a diamond and if it was not for the 3 triangles...they are just so perfectly shaped.
Guess I need to get it checked out. Thanks |

You didn't say how hard the stone is. Will a metal file scratch it? Will it scratch a piece of glass? Both Diamond and Sapphires are very hard stones and the fine cut metal file will not cut into the stone.
Most Geology departments and Geology museum's will look at the stone and give their opinion.
Nice find even if it is rose quartz.

Yeah, I know the ohms scale etc. I already scratched glass with it. Sharp piece of quartz wouldn't scratch it. I have not done any specific gravity test. I also considered sapphire
It does have a slight yellow tone but can't tell it in pic..pic does it no justice at all lol.
Thx
will update on what I find out. |

Try putting water on it. Water doesn't stick to diamonds. It will bead up much like on a waxed car.
If in doubt, take it to a jeweler. They have lights that can ID a diamond in seconds. Most pawn shops have the lights also. |

I did not know of the water test. I did it and water just beaded up and would not stay on it. I am going to take it to natural science center in Greensboro. If it is a diamond...it comes in at 106.95 CT.
From my understanding, diamonds found in NC etc are like half CT to a CT right? This is flawed in areas but could still be cut into a nice stone.. |

Several gemstones glow with black light. Sapphires, diamonds, rubies...a few more. I can't find my black light..I think it left this world a long while ago with other stuff that goes with black lights lol |

I took this to avis. Lady put the probe to it and did not read out as diamond but she was very interested and said I need to take it to someone who cuts stones and recommended natural science center...she did not think it was regular quartz crystal. So..will keep updated. Thx for the help and comments. |

Thats what I love about prospecting. You never know what you will find. Good luck on the stone. If it's worth alot, don't forget us little guys. Hey a party would be nice. |

I had major doubts in it being a diamond..especially based on size and weight. I have found a diamond before in guilford county that was about one CT. The three jewelers did not know what it was. Though they were very interested in it..topaz I thought it was or considered it. Hard to id rough gems, or at least I am no gemologist. I have tossed some nice stones while prospecting for gold. I tossed a nice star ruby one time but someone else recovered it lol. Im still going to try and get an exact Id on it but still interesting. Thanks folks. I have a small hand full of stones that I need to get a clear id on. |

Some diamonds fluoresce under UV light and some don't. It's not a proof posititve test. I have several high quality UV lamps and a large collection of minerals that do "glow" under UV light.
I've taken one of my better protable UV lamps to a stream gravel bed hoping to see glowing diamonds, but there are lots of other small bits of stone that glow. I've even tried this with sorted garvel from my cons I take home. There's too much other stuff that glows to make it worth the effort for something that may or may not glow.
No luck finding diamond so far though.
I read where most NC diamonds had a yellowish cast/color to them.
The Dyartsville area had several diamond finds in the 1800's. |

The most common diamond colors are clear, yellow, and brown. Abour 50% of diamonds will flouresce under UV light. |

Funny thing is..I have found a handful of gemstones from small emerald to sapphire in Greensboro NC..guilford county on Buffalo creek lol.
Even the tiny one CT diamond came from there. On a stretch of private land..also a perfect arrow head. If anyone wants to see the arrow head..np. |
