Hey man you remember that clear stone i found? I did a homemade test to check for hardness....
First checked quartz...no scratch
Next checked sapphires(dug from montana).....no scratch
If anyone knows how i can do a hardness test to be absolutely certain what this is, i would appreciate it.
Rock before scratch test
Sapphire used in test
scratch test, you can see the marks in the triangle shaped part of the rock
after the scratch test....only cleared the "scratch" with bare fingers to remove residue...
Picture of sapphires dug in montana ...largest one there is 8.5 carats |

Did they come from one place or several? Nice looking sapphires!
I'm planning a trip out there and want to go to Gem Mountain and Spokane Bar Mine.

Update on the stone he found with me for anyone who was interested, I had him take it to a local gem shop and get their opinion. One guy there thinks its quartz, the other thinks its topaz. I am kinda leaning toward topaz as well because of the scratch test results, and it does have that gemstone look to it.
Oh and those are some amazing sapphires, congrats man. |

Agreed, those are some nice stones. Some of the pink ones are exceptional. |

Dickb.....those are from phillipsburg, MT all from the same "pay to mine" but if you do the all day you can go up and mine yourself and carry out as much concentrate as you can carry
Yukon....none of these are heat treated all are in natural state.
and if anyone is curious the topaz/quartz whatever it is weighs 97 carats... |

Well I am a rock hound and it looks like a topaz to me. I have some myself and I compared the picture and they do look the same to me. Thats a nice topaz and the sapphires are great too. |
