Went out to scratch some quartz to test a garnet/ruby? I found per Mr. Burgin. Well it scratched the hell out of the quartz so I left the gem on the quartz to show the finally ground up quarrtz dust on it and the quartz itself and as I was walking up the path to the porch it fell off into the the lava rocks decorating our walkway. No way to find it now unless I pick the lava rocks 1 by 1. Don't think it's worth it now.lol. I was going to take it to a jewler and see what it was worth but.....
Well here's the piece a quartz it ground into. I was grinding hard as I could to try and break it but the quartz gave way 1st. I have it circled lightly but its in the bottom right. |

I didnt see this post for some reason. Thats a shame you lost it. With a hardness test you shouldn't have to put lots of pressure to make a scratch, with enough force you can make something much softer scratch something much harder then it. For example a piece of quartz pressed too hard will scratch beryl. |
