Went down to LaGrange, Georgia this past weekend to dig some tourmaline var. Schorl, and rose quartz. I swear I have not given up on Gold but rocks are my first love. Here are a few pics from my trip.
Tourmaline Var. Schorl in quartz matrix.
Double terminated tourmaline in quartz.
Facet grade rose quartz.
Nice facet grade rose!

Thanks for posting the pics. I am a gold miner first and a rockhound second. I love tourmaline and rutile especially.

Hi MitchNC:
Nice finds, that Tourmaline is great looking and the rose is nice size and really nice looking to facet.
Do you facet or just collect?
I'd also like to know a little more about the place you went and if it is a pay to play.
They should calm the fever for a while!

It is a pay to play but it is not open all of the time. He may have one dig per month. I am pretty good friends with the owner of the place and he invited me down for a private machine dig last weekend. So even though it is pay to play, it is a pretty realistic mining experience. We dug the tourmaline right out of the vein and I busted that rose right out of the vein. You basically get out what you put into it. The place is called the Hogg Mine, in LaGrange, GA. The owner of place is Chris Painter and he is a great guy.
Here is the website www.hoggmine.com
I do not cut any stones right now but am interested in getting into it. |

Hi MittchNC:
Thanks for your reply and the web link.
That is the direction that I'm headed also. Right now just studying and getting my equipment together. I hope to start cutting my first cabs this winter.
I'll pass a link back to you. This is Leonard's forum and Matt Mattson has a board on it. They live down in Florida and he has very good utube video's to see.

Good luck to you.
