I put a thin sheet of plywood over the two metal bars on mine. I drilled a few holes in the wood and tied it on with string. It makes it eaiser to put rocks on to keep it weighed down and stable. If you have an A52 it fits nicely into this model. If the A52 misses any gold the AM should get it.
I done this 3 times but the A52 didn't miss any. It depends on the water flow and how much material I intend to run on which sluice I use. There's certainly much less cons to clean up with your new sluice. I hope it gets lots O' gold for you.

a52 works great in fast/turbulent water. expedition, just like other am sluices work really well in smooth even flowing water..its a great sluice. I would choose the expedition over an a52 but that's just me. Just about every creek sluice has its positives and negatives.

i had an A52 but like said it takes a lot of water to run it "right" and the places i go dont have a lot of water, im going to have to "make" a light weight flair for this expedition to be able to use it in some of the creeks i go to.. im thinking about aluminum flair that "fans" out with a couple wing nuts (not my friends here) Smile

then i can collapse it when in travel ... il post picture when i get around to making it......

I've run my expedition in fast, slow, swift, turbulent, low, and high water. Never misses gold, just have to pay attention to how she wants to eat material. Smile

I'd like to see some pics or even a video on an Angus set up properly in each situation. From what I've read you only want the water about half way right? You don't want it over the top of the sluice on the "in" side? If that's true is it true regardless of the amount of water flow?

i would be the wrong person tho she the "correct" way to use one, but yes you want to keep the sluice sides above the water flow, you want just enough water running through it that takes the gravel/dirt through "smoothly" just like with any other sluice you want to get a V going down the top end... MAYBE somebody else will pop in and help ya better....

about 1/3 of the riffles on my sluice are about the same as whats in the expedition. I use it on all kinds of water, but to be honest I kinda like it fast and high. the size of the gravel that can go through it is based on water speed and hight, and when its moving I can run it almost flat and just shovel the gravel into it. the gold is still getting caught in the traps when the rocks are rolling on through. On the other hand, if the water is very skinny I can still use it, just need to classify and feed slower and with more slope.

I dont know if you are using a sluice designed the same but If you have rocks of all sizes going through AM sluices or similar design you will retain gold but you will be blowing gold out as well..classifying is important based on the avg size gold you are getting. for example if the gold is around.. 20 -20 or so and you have alot of half inch rocks or bigger..you are loosing some gold. those different size bigger rocks will boil it right out of the riffle. they can catch gold in most water situations but a smooth even flow with proper classification is going to be best performance.

you don't want water to deep going through or to shallow.. works best if the material is entering slick plate and heavies like black sands and gold are smoothly being taken in by water last. ya wanna see the material dancing so to speak in the riffles..its upgrading properly. that being said you can run it where material is moving to one side more etc and you will still catch gold but loose some too. hope that helps.these type sluices work best in smooth water but you can run it in uneven flows with turbulence and catch gold but gold will also be lost as well.

The angle you set it up can make a difference also. I used to set mine up heading straight downstream. At least in the direction of the creek bed. Then I noiticed on one occasion that the current was heading more toward one side of the creek bed, rather than straight downstream. The"V' looked perfect, and my sluice had been set level with a plastic level that I now carrry all the time, but much of the stuff behind the riffles was tending toward one side. It so happens that the current was building up higher on one side than the other making an unlevel water depth. I re-set the sluice so it was headed in the same direction as the current or water flow and the issue was solved.
